Use your target’s Magic DEF and your family’s attack value. Magic Penetration remains a separate later stage and should not be merged into Ignore Magic DEF.
Choose the target before the stat
Magic DEF investment has meaning only against a known target profile. Select the monster and difficulty, then retain the target’s Magic DEF, reductions, classification, and encounter behavior while comparing builds.
The same Magic Penetration value can produce a different improvement when the target or formula family changes. A family handler owns the exact ordering and breakpoint behavior.
Keep each lane contribution named
Ignore Magic DEF, Magic Penetration, target Magic DEF changes, and damage reduction must remain separate. Verified hybrid families may add a specifically documented converted contribution, but that conversion does not make Physical Penetration a universal magic stat.

Verify with the ledger
Inspect the defense step before later element, critical, encounter, and cap stages. This isolates whether the upgrade improved the defense lane or whether another conditional modifier caused the final change.
