Planning equipment progression

A method for choosing the next practical equipment upgrade instead of comparing only finished best-in-slot items.

By RO Codex Team Updated
Compare the item at your reachable stage

A catalog item can have base modifiers, upgrade stages, refinement behavior, random attributes, and a family of related tiers. Compare the stage you can afford now. A fully upgraded result can hide a weaker early progression curve or a material bottleneck.

Use the canonical family page to compare variants without creating duplicate pages for every tier.

Include acquisition and material cost

RO Codex links monster drops, instance rewards, recipes, crafting materials, skill costs, and other access paths to the same item. These relations turn an effect list into an actionable plan: where the item comes from, what it consumes, and what else competes for those resources.

  • Check the equipment slot and job compatibility.
  • Compare current and next upgrade-stage effects.
  • Count recipe materials and Zeny.
  • Keep useful materials that appear in later recipes.
Value conditions, not just totals

A smaller always-active bonus can outperform a larger conditional bonus in the content you farm. Keep race, size, element, weapon, skill, and status restrictions visible. Also separate equipped effects from permanent Handbook collection rewards.

Worked checkpoint
If an upgrade gives +8% damage only against one race while another gives +5% to the main skill in every encounter, test both against your weekly targets and weight the result by how often each condition is active.
Plan a replacement horizon

Estimate how long the item will remain in the build. Expensive refinement or rare materials are easier to justify on a long-lived piece than on a short bridge item. The best next upgrade is the one that improves the real farming loop without blocking the next tier.

Sources and evidence

This guide is based on the following player-facing evidence. Read the data quality standards for accuracy commitments and known limitations.

Equipment progression pages
Base items, upgrade stages, effects, and family variants provide the values used in the comparison.
Recipe and acquisition relations
Crafting materials, drops, instance rewards, and access paths supply the practical cost and source.
